Volume confirmation when momentum turns
RSI, MACD, and stochastic lines derive from price alone. Volume shows whether other participants joined the move. We add one volume rule to oscillator entries: the signal bar or confirmation bar should show higher volume than the prior three-bar average.
Why thin bars matter
Low-volume momentum turns often reverse within the same session. On UK equities, lunch-hour bars with shrinking volume produce stochastic crosses that fail by the close. Filtering those saves small but repeated losses that compound over a month.
Forex volume limitations
Spot forex volume on retail platforms reflects tick volume, not centralised exchange volume. It still correlates with activity โ we use the same three-bar average rule but accept that forex volume is a proxy. Workshop participants trading forex note this limitation in their written entry rules.
Combining with MACD histogram
When histogram bars expand in the trend direction on rising volume, continuation trades carry more weight than histogram expansion on declining volume during a pullback. Mark both on ten FTSE examples and compare outcomes โ the visual difference is obvious on historical data.
